NORFOLK, Ontario – Thieves have struck at nearly half a dozen wind-turbine sites along the lakeshore in Haldimand in recent days.
They have their sights set on small generating units installed in these locations. Five yellow and black 1,200-watt generators have been stolen over the past week. Each generator is worth about $400.
The generators are used to power the air navigation lights on top of the giant turbines. These lights warn passing aircraft at night that tall structures are in the vicinity.
“Those responsible for removing these generators are probably of the belief that it is only “stealing a generator” and is not going to hurt anyone,” Insp. Phil Carter of the Haldimand OPP said in a news release. “What they don’t realize is that they are putting small aircraft in danger of striking these towers.”
Anyone with information regarding these thefts is asked to contact the Haldimand OPP at 1-905-772-3322 or Crime Stoppers of Haldimand, Norfolk & Tillsonburg at 1-800-222-8477.
